In mainstream medicine, the gold standard of disease prevention consists of selling statins to as many as possible for the prevention of heart disease, ignoring the fact that statins have not convincingly been shown to provide an overall health benefit in primary prevention trials and has not been tested long enough to properly evaluate the increased cancer rates found in some statin studies.
Your physician will tell you that the statin drug he is wants you to take reduces your risk of dying from heart disease by 30%. What he fails to tell you is that you will feel miserable, your muscles and tendons will begin to deteriorate, and that you risk having more serious side effects further down the line.
He also fails to tell you that the 30 % risk reduction he was talking about was is expressed in relative terms for marketing purposes. The real risk reduction expressed in absolute terms is miniscule at best:
“Does the doctor say: ‘Mr Smith, if you take statins this will reduce your risk of dying from heart disease by 30%’? Or does she say: ‘Mr Smith, if you take statins, then in seven years’ time there is a one chance in about 120 that your death will have been prevented’? LIPITOR - A REAL WORLD EXAMPLE
Pfizer's statin drug Lipitor remains the best-selling drug in the world for the fifth year in a row. Its annual sales were $12.9 billion. Even though the benefits of statins have been proven to be infinitesimally small compared to other safer approaches, Lipitor and other statins are hailed as wonder drugs.
Lipitor is marketed directly for women even though studies conclusively show there is no benefit at all.
Side effects, yes. Benefits? No. The ASCOT study, the largest randomized clinical study of statin effectiveness in women, found that the women who took Lipitor developed 10% more heart attacks than women in the group given placebo.
Is this the kind of advice you get from your current providers of corporate wellness information?

The Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA, accuses Merck of various forms of scientific fraud concerning the drug Vioxx.
According to JAMA, Merck waged a campaign of deception in promoting its drug, among other things using ghost-writers to write their own studies and then paying independent academic researchers to pose as the main authors.
These are widespread practices in the pharmaceutical industry:
"But make no mistake -- the manipulation of study results, authors, editors, and reviewers is not the sole purview of one company."--- Catherine D. DeAngelis, Editor at JAMA
During sworn testimony before the U.S. Senate, Dr. David J. Graham, FDA, stated that according to estimates, Vioxx caused upwards of 160,000 heart attacks and strokes.
Disease mongering
Pharmaceutical companies have been accused of disease mongering. Here are a few quotes from an article on that subject in the British Medical Journal:
“There's a lot of money to be made from telling healthy people they're sick. Some forms of medicalizing ordinary life may now be better described as disease mongering: widening the boundaries of treatable illness in order to expand markets for those who sell and deliver treatments."
"Pharmaceutical companies are actively involved in sponsoring the definition of diseases and promoting them to both prescribers and consumers. The social construction of illness is being replaced by the corporate construction of disease.”
"...Genuinely independent sources of information about health problems could replace those skewed towards making the maximum numbers of healthy people feel sick."
“...invisible and unregulated attempts to change public perceptions about health and illness to widen markets for new drugs”

Studies has shown that money from drug companies strongly influence how medical journals report on dietary supplements. The percentage of articles claiming dietary supplements were unsafe was 4% in journals with the smallest numbers of pharmaceutical ads and a whopping 67% in journals having the most ads from the industry.
There is an outpouring of articles sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry that seem to be designed to be flawed in a multitude of ways that all cause vitamins appear ineffective compared to pharmaceuticals in preventing disease.
Should we be surprised that they want to promote pharmaceuticals over vitamins? No. Should we be surprised that they prioritize profits over public health? No. Not any more. No-one should be unaware of their business practices by now.
